"The Arctic and its people remain a distant mystery for most of us" says His Royal Highness, Charles, The Prince of Wales, in his foreword to this book.

The Kazan explores that mystery through the eyes of 24 young people from 11 countries around the world, young people who came together on the Canadian Arctic Expedition in 1988, to canoe down the lower, northern half of the river.  Along the way, they worked for scientists accompanying the expedition, engaged in fieldwork focused on the archaeology, palaeo-ecology, and breeding birds of the tundra.  Individual chapters by each of the expedition's scientists offer an engaging description of the river valley's natural and human history.  The excerpts from youthful journals, interspersed throughout the book, bring the whole experience alive.  The expedition itself was conceived of, organized, and led by David Pelly.
